About Us
Beginning 1.4 miles west of the Russian River, the Stone Ranch is situated on the inclines and foothills of the western side of Alexander Valley half way between Geyserville and Healdsburg. Nestled against the hills between Alexander Valley and Dry Creek, the east facing slopes receive the soft morning light and are one of the first vineyards in the valley to get shade in the afternoon.
Originally, the ranch was planted with prune trees, and slowly replaced with vineyard through the years. The first blocks of grapes was Zinfandel planted in the mid-1960s. Today the vineyard is 87 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Primitivo. These vines spread their roots in gravelly loam soils marked with random pockets of clay and sprinkled with alluvial river rock from ancient floods. There’s nothing like digging through several feet of brown loam and river cobble to hit a solid layer of clay!
The property is made up of parcels from Pioneer families; the Longs and the Stones, purchased from their descendants by Everett D. Lampson, Sr. and his two sons in 1941 and 1959 respectively.
After several decades of varying management, Everett Sr.’s granddaughter Laura and her husband Jim Furlong managed the vineyard from 1997 to 2019. In 2020, their son Andy took over management of the ranch. With an eye to the future, the vineyard is now incorporating regenerative and organic techniques such as compost application, cover crop, alternative tillage and experimenting with the use of biological pest control.
In 2024, we welcomed 12 sheep to join our 5 goats as we expand the possibilities of the land. This year we hope to plant our first hedgerow and insectary near the vineyard.
